When I get my mind set on something, I commit. So when I decided it was time to convert my barely used, perfectly lit garage into a studio, I moved quick.

When I moved into this house, I knew that the space had so much potential. The glass garage doors aren’t for everyone, but I think they are amazing. I truly don’t think I could go back to anything else. The natural light that floods the space is illuminating and welcoming. Starting photography, I knew right away that I wanted to finally transform the space to its truest potential.

Putting the Space together

The Curtains

Since we do live here, and still have belongings, we needed a way to hide our things, but still keep things looking aesthetic. While toying with some different ideas, I decided that simply white curtains were the best option. Thankfully, Ikea has a simple sliding ceiling curtain track (FRAMFUSIG), and 118'“ curtains (RITVA) that were exactly what I was looking for. This system gives us the opportunity to open up and use the space and gym in the back when there are no bookings, but still keep the space looking professional and tidy when the curtains are pulled.

Subtle Details

The Furniture

When I started dreaming up the space in my head, I knew I wanted the aesthetic to be welcoming and warm, but still have a timeless effect. I had my eye on a very trendy daybed, I was worried that it would soon be out of style and less appealing.

I decided to go with the Better Homes & Gardens Nola Sofa Bed so that I could easily convert the space to whatever needs my clients had. Cozy family session? Of course! Newborn session? You got it. Boudoir? No problem! The mid-century style provides such a timeless look for the photos that will always look great hanging in your home!

In addition, Target provided some of the perfect staples. A mirror is a necessity in the studio for you to ensure you look the way you were hoping. I absolutely loved the look of the French Country Easle. The Villa Park Round Wooden End Table by Studio McGee is the perfect place to add the little details that tie the space together.

The Details

Again, I wanted to add timeless, subtle features into the space that would add to the composition, but not take away from YOU, the subject. I added some simple vases with seasonal flowers and dried pampas grass, wood bead tassel, and a white throw blanket to pull it all together.

The Hedge Wall

The Hedge Wall might be one of my favorites. It’s a great, simple pop of color that is perfect for a portrait background. It can also easily be dressed up for the seasons. I have something else in store fo this spot, but, for now, the beautiful Opalhouse Woven Bench sits here.

My Hope For This Studio

I wanted a safe, welcoming place for families to come and get family, newborn, boudoir (and more!) photos done that was out of the elements, easily (and knowingly) cleaned regularly to protect from COVID, and made you feel at home. This space exactly what I imaged, and I hope you love it as much as I do.
